Robotic Simulation Training for Cardiologists at PTS

More than 230 junior doctors from hospitals around Spain are set to receive training at the Advanced Multifunctional Centre for Simulation and Technological Innovation (CMAT) in the Granada Health Science Technological Park (PTS). The training will be provided using robotic surgical simulation techniques, recreating real-life medical scenarios. Thirteen training sessions will be run between now and May 2018 so that as many doctors as possible can attend.

More than 230 cardiologists will attend the training sessions at CMAT.

The CMAT-based training programme is being run jointly by Andalusia's Foundation for Technological Advancement and Professional Training (IAVANTE) and the Spanish Cardiology Society (SEC). The aim is to use innovative simulation methods to train doctors to a high standard, thus ensuring optimum patient safety.

There will be thirteen training sessions in total, divided into two levels: a basic course for cardiologists in their second foundation year, and a more advanced course for fifth-year registrars.  The sessions will examine cardiac emergencies such as heart attacks, ischemia or heart failure. The basic course will also look at advanced life support (ALS) protocols.

Students on the advanced course will learn how to insert and remove stents, tubes that expand inside a narrow or blocked blood vessel. They will also be taught cardiac catheterisation, a surgical procedure in which a catheter is inserted into a chamber or vessel of the heart under x-ray guidance.

This collaboration between IAVANTE and SEC will provide a framework for future collaborative projects, including further courses, training and assessment in areas of common interest. CMAT provides the perfect training setting thanks to its facilities with realistic surgical environments, innovative training methods with simulation of real-life scenarios, high-tech tools, and physical and virtual-reality simulators.
