Andalusian Centre of Excellence for Research into Innovative Medicines

The University of Granada's Sport and Health Institute (IMUDS)

The University of Granada's Sport and Health Institute (IMUDS) has become the fourteenth building to open in the Granada Health Science Technological Park (PTS). A further ten buildings are currently under construction, some of which will be up and running very soon or are at a very advanced stage of development.

110 researchers work at IMUDS, using the Institute's advanced equipment to carry out research into sport and health such as a snow simulator with an artificial slope to simulate the movements of skiers, and a tensiomyography machine to monitor muscle performance.

The building has a number of multi-purpose biomedical and biomechanics laboratories, as well as classrooms, office areas and a large sports therapy section complete with therapy pool. The Institute work on projects to promote health and quality of life, and carry out research into fibromyalgia and obesity, all based on studies by researchers in the fields of sport, medicine and physiotherapy.

IMUDS is run by the University of Granada, and the building has a total floor area of 2,654 m2 spread over two storeys. The therapy pool is on the ground floor. The building was designed by architect Carlos Quintanilla and has been constructed and equipped using a budget of more than three million euros.

The inauguration of the IMUDS building was attended by the Spanish Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Granada, Francisco González Lodeiro. The Institute is next to the new privately run Campus Tennis Club. In its grounds, a large canopy has been installed over the multi-purpose sports pitch, which boasts a running track, long-jump pit and high-jump area.
